The Ray Charles Tribute Orchestra is an 9 to 14 -piece ensemble that performs the music of Ray Charles.

The Orchestra features Grammy Award Winner Donald Ray Johnson Or Mr. Thomas Alexander ( The Voice ) on lead vocals and former Ray Charles Bassist John Gray.

 

 

Donald Ray Johnson
Donald Ray Johnson has spent a lifetime dedicated to music.  After some 40 years, this Texas born bluesman is still going strong.  A Grammy Award winner with the group ‘A Taste of Honey’ (first African-American group to win a Grammy for Best New Artist category) and twice Maple Blues Award nominee.  He was voted Best Male Blues Vocalist in 2007 by Real Blues Magazine.  Donald has toured with Blues and R&B artists Phillip Walker, Big Mama Thornton, Smokey Wilson, Teddy Pendergrass & The Isley Brothers.  Visit his webpage at www.donaldray.com

 

 

 

John Gray
John Gray has been a fan of the music of Ray Charles throughout his entire music career. He has played with some of the world’s greatest musicians including Nat Adderley, Chet Baker, Tommy Banks, Lenny Breau, Ray Charles, Petula Clark, Eddie Daniels, Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis, Jack DeJohnette, Herb Ellis, Sonny Fortune, Dexter Gordon, The Ink Spots, Steve Lacy, K.D. Lang, Frank Mantooth, The Marvelettes, Butch Miles, Dr. Clarence ‘Big’ Miller, P.J. Perry, The Platters, Frank Rosolino, George Shearing, Woody Shaw, Jack Sheldon, Buddy Tate, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Eddie "CleanHead" Vinson and Jack Walrath.

 

 

Samuel Lee Downie 

Juno award winning Drummer/Percussionist/Singer/Songwriter Samuel Lee Downie originally from Manhattan, New York has been a performer for his entire life. As a drummer/lead and background vocalist for numerous years, Samuel has been able to sing various styles of music through his years of experience and that has given him the opportunity to hone his skills on perfecting his voice for various musical endeavors. Samuel has performed across the globe with a vast number of musical artists. Most notably, having toured in the past with the multi award winning late great pianist Oscar Peterson, he also toured worldwide with the amazing Harry Belafonte as a drummer and background vocalist, and also spent 3 years as the touring drummer for the late Wilson Pickett and was a dynamic part as the drummer/singer with the incredible vocal styling’s of the Grammy award winning Chaka Khan.  Currently Samuel has been in preparation as the new voice of the Ray Charles Tribute Orchestra. Not only does Samuel look a little bit like a younger Ray Charles, but with his unbelievable vocal talents, he sounds like the man Ray Charles himself.
